3. Retaining Walls - Not over 4 feet high from footing to top, unless supporting a surcharge.
4. Water Tanks - Supported directly on grade, less than or equal to 5,000 gallons.
5. Sidewalks and Driveways - Standard installations.
6. Finish Work - Painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops and similar.
7. Prefabricated Swimming Pools - Less than 24 inch deep.
8. Playground Equipment - Swings and other equipment.
9. Window Awnings - Supported by an exterior wall, less than or equal to 54 inch projection, no additional support needed.
10. Decks - less than or equal to 200 square feet area, less than or equal to 30 inches above grade, not attached to a dwelling and not serving an exit door.
1. Temporary Decorative Lighting - Listed cord-and-plug connected.
2. Reinstallation of Plug Receptacles - Not outlets.
3. Replacement of Branch Circuit Overcurrent Devices - Same location, required capacity.
4. Low-voltage Systems - Less than 25 volts and less than or equal to 50 watts output.
5. Minor Repairs - Lamp replacement, connecting approved portable equipment to permanent receptacles.
1. Portable Appliances - Heating, cooking, clothes drying.
2. Minor Part Replacement - No safety or approval changes.
3. Portable Fuel-cell Appliances - Not connected to fixed piping or power grid.
1. Portable Appliances - Heating, ventilation, cooling units.
2. Steam, Hot or Chilled Water Piping - Within regulated heating/cooling equipment.
3. Minor Part Replacement - No safety or approval changes.
4. Portable Evaporative Coolers
5. Self-contained Refrigeration Systems - less than or equal to 10 pounds refrigerant or less than or equal to 1 horsepower motor.
The above exemptions are found in Section R105.2 of the 2021 International Residential Code (IRC). It lists certain building, electrical, gas and mechanical works that do not require a permit, provided they meet specific size, type and safety criteria.
